Border crossing in Bukavu capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo is alarming as the tight border restriction on movement of people, goods; food supply is cut-off between Rwanda and Congo in fear of spreading the deadly Ebola virus to neighboring border communities on Rwanda.
Bukavu province is the capital city of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo situated at the rim of Lake Kivu in the south-western connecting with the Cyangugu border of Rwanda.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, restrictions are necessary to stop the spread of the rare type of Ebola, known as the Bundibugyo virus. Rwanda being directly close the Democratic Republic of Congo closed interconnecting borders in order to stop the spread of the Ebola virus currently seen in Congo.
Bukavu – Congo depends on Rwanda border trade and its closure is currently causing famine in Bukavu district and the rest of the DR Congo as other neighboring countries have closed borders. About three weeks since the outbreak was detected in Congo, the locals have no access to supplies including food for survival.
In-order to stop the virus from spreading into Rwanda, the country is banning all travels of Rwandan foreign nationals and African foreign nationals who’ve travelled through the DRCongo in the month of May as well as restricting Rwandan nationals who’ve travelled the Democratic Republic of Congo through quarantine.
Three weeks since the virus was discovered in the DR Congo, over 204 people in Congo have been reported dead – according to the Congolese health ministry.
