Today Rwanda receives Ellen DeGeneres in Kigali on her journey to Volcanoes national park home of Rwanda’s critically endangered mountain gorillas which is part of the Virunga volcano region, on a mission to start planning the gorilla protection facility.

On a surprise announcement early this year by wife Portia de Rossi on Ellen’s 60th birthday, the American talk show host, comedienne, television personality and actor for a long time has shared the same dream as late Dian Fossey with a strong devotion to protecting the critically endangered mountain gorillas Africa. Dian Fossey an American primatologist studies gorillas in Africa and sacrificed her life doing what she loved the most – protecting mountain gorillas against poachers at her Karisoke research center which she set up at the foot hill of Karisimbi and Bisoke volcanoes in Volcanoes national park.

Ellen today continues Dian Fossey’s footsteps to continue her dream and keep the mountain gorillas protected in Africa’s jungle forests. Mountain gorillas are critically endangered primate species listed by the IUCN and since the time of Dian fossey, efforts have been underway by international organizations and governments where gorillas are located to conserve the remaining gorilla population.

Today Ellen joins Dian Fossey to continue her legacy as she sets up the Ellen DeGeneres Campus – giving Dian’s Karisoke research center a permanent home in Rwanda. Projected to cover 50,000 square feet of building space, the compass has been planned to offer a typical study atmosphere for students and researchers around the globe. The campus looks at empowering the local communities living around volcanoes national park, a research center comprising of class rooms, laboratories, meeting and conference space as well as accommodations for researchers, students and exchange students visiting the academy to exchange science, research and conservation developments, enhance educational strategies, as well as engage the world in the effort and great need to protect and empower for the world’s most vulnerable wildlife species.
